In December, Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston Area Council held its Winter Camp in Cold Springs, Texas at Camp Strake. Scouts participated in camping, adventure programs and merit badge programs. One of the many merit badge programs offered was the American Welding Society – Houston Section sponsored Welding Merit Badge.
Scouts learned safety precautions and fundamental welding techniques such as butt and T joints. The program culminates in the completion of personal barbecue grill projects donated by EMI. Instructors included AWS volunteers Earl Simon, Robert Hall, Henry Elgie, and Kendell Wills. An Eagle Scout, Henry is also a former participant in the program and current EMI employee.
Scouts, AWS, and EMI continue to seek out and cultivate the next generation of welders.
